Can Drinking Coffee Count As Water Intake?

Just because coffee is a liquid does not mean it counts as water intake. Coffee contains caffeine, which works as a natural diuretic. This means that coffee can actually dehydrate you if consumed in excess.

People who are counting their glasses of water consumed each day should not factor in coffee as water intake. Water hydrates, whereas caffeine dehydrates. When a person drinks too much coffee they may become dehydrated and in need of more water. One or two cups does not typically hurt, but more than that may require the consumption of excess water to keep hydrated.

Coffee works as a diuretic so it actually does the opposite that water does for your system. Caffeine stimulates the bladder and causes you to urinate. Consuming too much caffeine results in dehydration because of the excess urine released. If a person drinks too much coffee they should consume more water because they are at risk for dehydration.

In no way should coffee count as water intake, even though it does contain water. Only water counts as water intake. Despite the obvious, many people count liquids as water intake, but only water should be counted.  It is important to drink the recommended daily supply of eight, eight ounce glasses of water daily in order to keep the system operating effectively and smoothly.

Staying hydrated helps stabilize your overall health.
