Many people that start their weight loss journey want to know how many calories should I burn in a day. That’s a good question to ask because losing weight has to do with the amount of calories you burn versus how many you consume.
Whether you understand it or not, your body is burning calories constantly. Even sleeping or lying in bed burns calories. If you want to burn calories that result in weight loss, experts say to lose about 1-2 pounds per week. A pound of fat is approximately 3,500 calories. That means in order to lose one pound you have to burn an additional 3,500 calories in one week to lose one pound.
Experts recommend people consume an average of 2,000 calories per day.
Let’s say you burn on average 1,700 during your normal activities. That means you are running at a surplus of 300 per day. You need to turn the surplus into a calorie deficit. Losing a pound a week means you run a deficit of 500 calories per day over seven days. That means if you consume your 2,000 calories per day you need to burn 2,500. You can either create your deficit by exercising, which burns more calories, or by restricting your consumption of food.
Most people use both methods. Most people find that they can manage a 500 calorie deficit over time to lose weight.
