The sushi craze hit America about 25 years ago and hasn’t slowed down since. It seems like a healthy alternative to other “fast foods” especially since it incorporates fresh seafood, rice, and vegetables. But how low in calories is it? It really depends on what type of sushi you are enjoying. The answers might surprise you.
California Rolls and Shrimp Tempura are arguably the most popular types of sushi dishes. Let’s say we sat down to a tray of six each for a total of 12 pieces. There are a staggering 870 calories in Sushi and 32 grams of fat. That’s an average of 72.5 calories per piece. Plus, it is high in carbohydrates. Not saying that sushi is bad for you, but its definitely not as low calorie as you would think. If you want to enjoy sushi without the calories and carbohydrates then try sashimi. This is a dish that has no rice and just fish. It’s low in carbs and high in protein.
The highest calorie sushi is the shrimp tempura roll that comes in at over 500 calories for the whole role not one piece. After that it’s the salmon and avocado roll with over 300 calories per roll followed by the California roll with over 250 calories per roll. The lowest calorie popular sushi is the Kappa Maki cucumber roll that has 135 calories per roll on average.
