While most people do not consume a cup of soy sauce at a time, it is interesting to know that in one cup of soy sauce there are 150 calories. However, in one tablespoon of soy sauce, which is what most people sprinkle over rice contains just 8 calories.
Soy sauce contains a lot of sodium and not so many calories. While there may only be eight calories in a tablespoon of soy sauce, there are over 900 mg of sodium. There is also one gram of protein and 35 mg of potassium in just one tablespoon of soy sauce. With so much sodium, which also contributes to the calorie content, doctors recommend avoiding soy sauce for those with hypertension or high blood pressure.
One individual packet of soy sauce that you receive in your Chinese food take-out order yields about 5 calories and in one ounce of soy sauce there is approximately 15 calories. Reduced sodium soy sauce does not mean reduced calories. The calorie content in low sodium soy sauce is about the same, give or take four to five calories.
If you are trying to cut back on your calories, soy sauce is probably not the place to cut. There are very few calories in a sprinkling of sauce and calories can be cut in better places. However, for those reducing their salt intake, soy sauce should be restricted.
