How Many Calories in Powdered Sugar?

There are zero grams of fat in powdered sugar making it a fat-free ingredient, but the calories are high and it is not recommended for anyone on a weight loss program.

There are approximately 10 calories per teaspoon of powdered sugar and 115 calories in one ounce.  There are nearly 400 calories in one cup of sifted powdered sugar used for cooking and almost 500 calories in a cup of unsifted powdered sugar. Powdered sugar is not used as commonly as table sugar, but is found in cooking and baking, especially desserts.  Powdered sugar is often seen as a topping for many desserts, including cookies, cakes, muffins and other products.

There are approximately 3 grams of carbohydrates in a teaspoon of powdered sugar and no protein to speak of. Powdered sugar is considered to be more natural than most artificial sweeteners but should be removed from the diet of someone trying to keep their blood sugar levels and blood glucose levels down.  Anyone suffering from diabetes or is pre-diabetic should avoid using too much powdered sugar.

Powdered sugar is high in calories and low in fat.  Research argues which is better for a person, powdered or granulated sugar.  The verdict is still out, but one thing is clear, both sugars should be consumed in moderation.  Eating too much of it can cause weight gain and even heart disease.
