Ground Beef is as American as baseball and apple pie. Just as the slogan says... it’s what’s for dinner. But lately ground beef has come under scrutiny for being fattening and unhealthy. So how many calories in ground beef are there? Let’s take a look.
Extra lean, grass fed ground beef with no additives - 55 calories in one raw ounce. The typical four ounce patty has 220 calories in it.
• 85% lean and 15% fat non grass fed ground beef has – 62 calories per ounce.
• 80% lean and 20% fat ground beef has – 72 calories per ounce making for a 288 calorie four ounce hamburger patty.
• 75% lean and 25% lean ground beef has 84 calories per ounce. A four ounce patty has 336 calories.
• 70% lean 30% lean ground beef has 95 calories per ounce. A four ounce patty has 380 calories.
As you can see the calories in ground beef vary greatly by the type you buy. If you want to cut down even more on the fat you can grill them and let the fat drip through or pan fry them and spoon out the fat from the pan. This cuts down on 25-35% of the fat which means less calories.
Ground beef is actually pretty good for you when enjoyed sparingly. It has a lot of protein and iron. But often times it is consumed as part of an unhealthy meal such as Hamburgers and French Fries.
