Blackberries are full of antioxidants and provide the body with free-radical fighting nutrients and vitamins that are good for the system. The fruit is also high in dietary fiber and contains nearly 8 grams in just one cup.

Blackberries do contain sugar, but compared to most fruits are not as high on the glycemic index.  The fruit offers 6-7 grams of sugar in one cup of fresh blackberries.

Blackberries, whether fresh or frozen, provide the body with lots of nutrition including vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron.  If the blackberries are packed in sweetener or syrup they are not as nutritious, as the sugar content takes away from the berries.  Most blackberries offer their own natural sweetener and are considered one of the best breakfast foods because of their antioxidant properties.

Blackberries can be added to cereals, oatmeal, yogurt or eaten by themselves.  The fruit is versatile and can be made into jams or spreads with or without the addition of sugar, which will drastically increase the calorie content.
