Bicycling does burn many calories at a time, but it depends on a variety of factors. One of which is how long the bicycling session is. If you want to burn a lot of calories, you must be willing to bicycle for a long period of time. Bicycling can be quite intense, especially when hills are involved, but does not burn as many calories as you might think.
One hour of bicycling on a hilly yet stable terrain can burn 500 calories per hour. Factors that change this number of calories over the one hour time frame include the physical fitness, age and gender of the person doing the cycling. A 130 pound fit individual may burn 500 calories, while a fit 180 pound person may burn 800 calories. The more muscle you have and the fitter you are, the more calories you will burn.
In order to up the calories burned per hour, no matter what your weight and fitness level is, you can ride up hill for lengthier periods of time. The ride will increase your heart rate and cause you to burn more calories because more energy is expended. Riding up hill is a great leg workout that will increase muscle and cause more calories to be burned. Riding downhill does not burns as many calories as going up hill.
