Walking is a favorite activity of people of all ages. Many utilize walking as a way to get exercise and lose weight. There is some controversy as to its effectiveness, and many people want to know how many calories do you burn walking a mile.
The answer depends on how fast you walk and how much you weigh. While walking is not the most strenuous activity and doesn’t burn many calories, it does burn some. Assuming you walk at a medium pace you can burn anywhere from 90-250 calories walking one mile. Most people will burn somewhere between 90 and 140. People who burn upwards of 200+ calories walking one mile are generally 300 or more pounds. Their bodies have to work so hard because they are so over weight.
A 150 pound person walking a mile at an average pace of about 2.5-3 miles per hour will burn 90-100 calories. A 200 pound person will burn about 125 calories walking that same mile at the same rate of speed. If you want to increase your calorie burn you can up the intensity by walking faster. Some people also choose to include ankle and wrist weights. Just by adding the ankle and wrist weights alone you can up the calorie burn about 25%. If you enjoy the pace of a leisurely stroll yet want to lose weight, it’s best just to prolong your walk and go for a couple of miles rather than just one.
