The diet industry is surrounded with myths, one of which involves bananas and if they are fattening or not. Bananas are considered to be a low-fat fruit that contain a half-gram of fat in one portion. That’s not a lot of fat!
What makes people determine that bananas are fattening is that they are low in water content compared to many other fruits, especially citrus. Bananas only contain 85 grams of water as compared to most fruits that exceed 95 grams or more. This means that bananas are calorie dense and as a result seem fattier than fruits like oranges, watermelon and kiwis.
One medium sized banana contains 105 calories and a half a gram of fat. In one banana there are three grams of fiber which helps reduce the fat content and calories even more. It is highly unlikely that you will gain weight from eating bananas because of their nutritional value.
Bananas, while perceived to be fattening, are also thought to be high in sugar. One mid-sized banana contains almost 30 grams of carbohydrates and 15 grams of sugar. Compared to other fruits, bananas are not high in sugar and therefore, not fattening. In just one regular sized apple, there are nearly 20 grams of sugar.
According to the American Heart Association, the sugar that is found in bananas is naturally occurring, therefore it is better for you than a bowl of oatmeal with sugar added.
