Losing weight and getting healthy doesn’t have to be a solitary part of your life. Many families are coming together in an attempt to get fit and healthy. In America, most family time is spent centered around food and sedentary activities. Video games, movies, and eating are some of the top ways families spend time together. Family time does not have to be unhealthy. Getting outdoors and enjoying life together as a family unit can strengthen the relationships and help the team get fit for life. Below are some helpful tips on how to use family time to get healthy.

1. Make it Fun

Try not to put too many expectations on anyone in the family, particularly the kids. This is especially true when the most activity you ever enforced was moving the pillow around on the couch. Take it slow and make it fun. Kids will thrive and want more when creativity and laughs are involved. Suggesting an after-dinner bike ride works well with the kids and gets the whole family outdoors breathing some fresh air while getting fit. Another great way to incorporate fun fitness into the family is to shoot some hoops together. You may not have a basketball hoop in the driveway, but investing in a $20 basketball and venturing over to the park may provide hours of fun and health. The kids won’t even know how hard they are working when chasing the ball around.

2. Head for the Outdoors

While most Americans sit on the couch eating snacks and enjoying a movie together, fit families are heading for the outdoors. Hiking, biking, swimming and playing ball are just some of the activities that can be done in the great outdoors. Fresh air and activity are great for a person’s physical and mental health. Families who are utilizing their family time to get fit and healthy avoid doing things that revolve around sedentary activities. It is more fun and healthy to take a walk along the beach, head for the roller rink or play a round of golf. The time doesn’t have to be a high-intensity plyometric training session, but rather a block of hours that involves fun activities that get the family moving.

3. Make it a Habit

Every Saturday, or any day of the week, maybe labeled Family Fun Day. Make it a habit by prioritizing it. When the kids see that you are serious and putting family fit time above other things, they are more likely to get on board and share in the fun. Even if it is just two hours a week, that is better than nothing. Research shows that consistent fitness will yield results, but the keyword is consistent. If the family enjoys a bike ride or swim session it is important to make it habit by scheduling it at the same time each week. The family will eventually get to where they are looking forward to that time spent together.

4. Stick Around Home

Family time doesn’t have to involve spending a lot of money or going away from home, but can be just as lucrative in terms of fitness if you stay around the house. The entire family will enjoy jumping on a trampoline together, playing catch or setting up a relay course in the backyard. There are a lot of activities that can be done as a family around the home. You don’t have to sit inside and watch television, but you can step outside and get healthy together.

5. Do Chores as a Team

While you may get groans from the children at first, showing them chores can be fun if done together as a team will speak volumes. Incorporate a mid-morning mow where the kids pull weeds and you mow the lawn. Family gardening time can be great when the children experience eating the fruits of their labor. Whatever chore you do, keep the pressure low and enjoy your time as a family.
