What do many people do when they’re thirsty and need something to drink? They grab an ice cold soda from the refrigerator and drink it down. But does soda dehydrate you? Let’s take a look.
People think soda dehydrates them because it contains the known diuretic caffeine. Dehydration is caused when the body loses fluids or when not enough fluids are taken in. Since caffeine is a diuretic that causes the body to lose fluids then soda must dehydrate you right? Wrong. Soda containing caffeine does not dehydrate you because it is nearly 100% water. That means the water to caffeine ratio is too large for the caffeine to cause dehydration.
That’s not to say soda does a good job of hydrating you. The sugar, caffeine, coloring and other ingredients all affect hydration. Soda may not dehydrate you but it does a poor job of hydrating you as well. Much of the problem with soda and hydration comes because people drink soda in place of drinking water. Regardless of how much soda you drink you should always consume at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water per day at minimum.
If you are going to drink soda make sure to avoid sugary sodas with a lot of calories. Drinking sugar free soda without caffeine will reduce the dehydration affects even more.
