Does Ritalin Cause Weight Loss?

Ritalin is a prescription drug used to combat the symptoms of ADHD and ADD. It is also a stimulant that is illegally used to lose weight. Anyone who uses Ritalin as a weight loss aid is playing with fire both physically and legally.

Anyone using Ritalin for weight loss purposes either has to lie about symptoms of ADHD or buy it illegally. It is a criminal offense to have Ritalin without a prescription. So does Ritalin cause weight loss?

The answer is maybe. Weight loss is listed as a possible side effect of Ritalin, but does not happen in everyone. The reason Ritalin can lead to weight loss is by decreasing your appetite.

Ritalin is a stimulant that causes the central nervous system to release chemicals in the brain that help people with ADHD, but can cause serious side effects in normal people. It can actually adversely affect your brain chemistry causing permanent damage and side effects such as paranoia, lack of concentration, jitters, nervousness, and vomiting. It can also be addicting. As you take Ritalin, your body becomes used to it and you have to up your dose. You then have to keep taking more. Once you go off of it you will gain the weight back and probably more. Using Ritalin to lose weight is not a smart choice.
