Oatmeal is a heart healthy breakfast that provides plenty of nutrients and long lasting energy. Its one of those good carbs that provide sustained energy and keeps your blood sugar levels stable. Combine it with some cooked egg whites and half an orange and you just might have the healthiest breakfast out there. But does oatmeal go bad? Read on to find out.
There have actually been university studies on this very subject. Researchers found that dry oatmeal lasted up to 28 years when unopened and stored in a dry, cool place. They actually cooked it up after being stored for that long and ate it. Not only did it taste fine, but it retained most of its nutrients. Wow!
On the other hand, lets say you have an open canister of dry oatmeal. In this case, it will last up to 12 months. That's still pretty good. As long as you eat in within a years time you are okay.
This doesn't mean you should not check your oatmeal to see if it is safe to eat if its only been sitting around for a few months. Factors such as temperature and moisture in the air affect it. So does oatmeal go bad? yes it does just like all foods. But it certainly lasts for quite a long time.
