The hype is that there are lower calories in Gelato than ice cream, but tastes better! In one cup of vanilla flavored gelato there are about 420 calories, 25 grams of fat and loads of sugar. This does not seem like a low-cal alternative to ice cream.
The same is true for other flavors of gelato. In one cup of chocolate flavored gelato there are 440 calories and in one cup of strawberry gelato there are 420 calories. This seems like a lot of calories and as a result, gelato should not be viewed as a low calories alternative to ice cream. Ice cream, in some cases, has slightly lower calories than gelato depending on the brand.
Now, there are low-cal varieties of gelato, but you have to search for them. A low-sugar or reduced-sugar variety of gelato will yield about 100 calories less per serving than regular gelato. Instead of consuming 440 calories in a cup, you can get 340 calories from a low-sugar variety of gelato.
If you are trying to cut back on your calories in gelato, then you should watch your portion size. Instead of eating a full cup serving, restrict your intake to a half-cup size or just a few tablespoons. Avoid toppings, as they can contribute to calories and give you more than you bargained for.
